Deputy Labor leader Richard Marles says a doctored tweet by a Chinese government official is "incendiary," appalling and is one which should be condemned. "The tweet was appalling, there's no other word to describe it," Mr Marles told Sky News. "It should be taken down and China should apologise".
The images – which has not been censored by Twitter despite being fake– was published by China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian who said he was “shocked by murder of Afghan civilians & prisoners by Australian soldiers”. Mr Marles said the tweet "doesn't add anything to what is obviously a very difficult relationship right now". "It is repugnant and it is offensive". He also said he believes the federal government has "acted appropriately to this".
