Tennis star Novak Djokovic was given an exemption by Australian authorities to enter the country based on a positive COVID-19 test on December 16, his lawyers said in court documents.

The lawyers for the world’s number one ranked player said Djokovic was issued an exception from Tennis Australia, the nation’s governing body for the sport -- and also received a document to that effect from the Department of Home Affairs on Jan. 1.

The Serbian since January 5 has been confined to a hotel used to detain refugees and asylum seekers, after his visa was revoked when he landed in Melbourne. He’s seeking a record 21st Grand Slam victory and has already won the Australian Open singles titles nine times. Djokovic, 34, said he was personally opposed to vaccines in 2020, but later clarified that he was no expert and would make the decision that’s right for him. Djokovic hasn’t previously disclosed his vaccination status.“I wouldn’t want to be forced to take a vaccine in order to be able to travel,” Djokovic said in 2020, months before the first coronavirus vaccines were available.

On Friday, Djokovic thanked his supporters via an Instagram post. He’ll remain in detention following a court decision to adjourn his appeal to a visa cancellation. The proceedings will resume Monday.

Morrison and his Government And there rules and Regulations not as clear as Morrison suggests they are Will get him in more International pain. Is he really as honest as he makes out to be? When he says RULES ARE RULES EVERYONE has to ABIDE BY IN AUSTRALIA?

The exception was so that he could participate in the tournament under Victorian rules NOT for him to be able to enter and remain in the country

Able to enter AUS but not exempt from quarantine

He would of had to declare this on arrival

did they mention he was out in public during that so called covid positive in Dec mmmmmmmm so many different stories and he said she said just deport and get on with it

Funny because Aus Open required medical exemptions on the 10th December, that was the cut off date.. he applied for an exemption for a positive test on the 17th December.. how did he apply and get it approved when the cut off date was before? Something off here

Still c19 positive from months ago or a fresh c19 infection? Irrelevant for visa exemption though…

By “Australian open authorities” who then asked health minister if one could get exempted if recently infected with covid or have had 1 shot, to which the health minister (actual government rep) said no. fixeditforyou ?

So if I get Covid, I don’t need the vaccine? Will Tennis Australia give me an “exemption”?
