Sally-Ann Williams knows what it’s like to forge a career in science and technology as an outsider. Now she’s hoping to make it easier for others.

Sally-Ann Williams’ journey to becoming a deep-tech investor might have been by “accident and hard work” and a generous dash of talent, but her mission as head of a new federal taskforce to instigate more diversity in science and technology is to ensure others have a “visible pathway”.

“If we are going to have a prosperous economy that is fuelled by technology and things that are founded in STEM, then we need to make sure that everyone in Australia is able to fully participate,” Ms Williams said. “It’s vital that Australians from all parts of the community have a chance to contribute to our ambitious scientific and technological agenda,” he said.

She is chief executive of Cicada Innovations, an incubator for deep tech start-ups in Sydney. She had previously spent 12 years in R“I got there by accident and hard work – not by design,” she said. “My real objective in participating in this work is how do you make it easier for the next kid who is growing up and doesn’t have a visible pathway into a career at Google, or a university career or running a deep-tech incubator.
