Queensland police charged a man after a couple were found dead in a house fire but five hours later they released him when new information came to light.

Queensland police have freed a man who was earlier charged with the murder of a married couple found in a charred house south-west of Brisbane.

The bodies a 68-year-old Christine Stephan and her 73-year-old husband Joseph Stephan were found inside. “I can confirm that as a result of this investigation, we have identified that Joe and Christine died from significant injuries caused by active violence and not as a result of the fire,” he said about 10.30am.However, in a police statement published just after 3.30pm on Sunday, QPS said the decision to charge someone was based on “the strength of the information and evidence”.
