Army veteran Dave Dyer came back from an overseas posting with PTSD. He says volunteering has saved his life.

When Australian army veteran Dave Dyer came back traumatised from an overseas posting, he "fell down a hole". He said volunteering had saved his life.Treating children who had suffered horrific violence at the hands of militia groups left him psychologically scarred.Mr Dyer was traumatised by the violence he saw while working as a medic in Rwanda.

"I had a serious breakdown at work, I was trying to get gentleman ready for deployment to East Timor when I fell into a serious hole," he said.Soon after, Mr Dyer left the Australian Defence Force — an organisation he said did little to help him. He was among the first to volunteer for the recovery effort, and said the program had given him a "new lease on life."Researchers believe volunteer programs could improve veterans' mental health.
