NSW Education Standards Authority chief Paul Martin wants to see a modernisation of the HSC, which has not faced major changes in more than 20 years.

The state’s schools standards boss has flagged a major overhaul of the HSC that could include digitised exams and a rethink of the use of essays.

“All of those things probably need the board to systematically have a think about over the next few years.”Martin said stress levels among HSC students were rising despite attempts to reduce the number of assessments.Advertisement“It’s possible to change the nature of exams as you move down the path towards some level of digitised exams,” Martin said.

Universities’ use of early entry schemes, which bypass ATARS, has skyrocketed after the pandemic. More than 43,000 early places were released to students for entry to 2023 courses.Last year, the NSW Vice Chancellors’ Committee agreed to delay “There are good reasons for not publishing performance data for lower-ranked schools. But it means that compared to parents of students at high SES schools, parents of students at low SES schools get little comparative information on their schools,” he said.“I do think we end up having HSC rankings which are skewed to selective public and independents and I think that’s the case every single year.
