Did women get what they want from this week’s budget?

More money, fewer expenses and some further safeguards for the future – on balance, this was not a bad budget for women, who make up 51 per cent of our population.The latter will boost lower paid workers’ income – and women hold a disproportionate number of such jobs. Meanwhile, repeated HILDA studies show older, single, renting women already have the highest poverty rate in the country.

Women are contending with many issues and towards the beginning it says: “The government respectfully acknowledges and regrets the loss of those who have died and the harm and distress caused to those who are affected by violence, suicide, self-harm, stillbirth or miscarriage.” Money has been allocated to help in all these areas.
