A Murray-Darling Basin community leader says the former agriculture minister originally opposed water purchases as the Queensland Government suggests there was a better deal.

Anthony Lynham says he supported a very different deal in 2015, an opportunity the Commonwealth wasted. But Queensland Natural Resources Minister Anthony Lynham told the ABC today he had supported a very different deal in 2015, and that the Commonwealth had wasted an opportunity.

"We thought that this was a good deal for Queensland, it would help us meet our commitments to the Murray-Darling Basin Plan because it was the water, the two properties, and the infrastructure," he said. "These properties had been on the market for quite some time, it was a real buyer's market back in 2015.

He said Liberal MP Greg Hunt, who was agriculture minister in 2015 when an earlier deal was rejected, would have been acting on departmental advice also, but Mr Joyce offered no insight into why the water buyback went ahead in 2017 and for a higher price.

Bit hard to do due diligence when you're pist all the time🍺🍺

Yet another apologist for the former minister. There was no reason on this planet that he had to pay an exorbitant amount for water. This was a deal done without a proper tender process therefore it stinks of corruption.

He is a fool, always was.

Who knows? With his zipper down anythings possible 😂😂😂

gameofmates... signals, grey gift, mates and myth

As far as I understand, he paid the market price, exactly like labour did.

It's pretty clear that he did absolutely zero due diligence, so yeah...he probably could have gotten a much better deal. But that doesn't matter when you're lining Lib pockets!

Why don’t you lot theirABC just put your red t-shirts on & door-knock for Labor? That’s right, because television & radio can reach more people. Seriously. ffs. blatant

how is this not being reported as embezzlement? o thats right its the kremlin broadcaster

A better deal for who? Not the taxpayer obviously.

He did get a better deal from $5000 to $2800

either he was lazy or dumb or he knew his mate was connected to Cayman island company He should have deducted 30% corp tax b4 doling out money to Cayman island

Did Barnaby Joyce miss an opportunity to retire from politics with a modicum of dignity?

Yes, but he didnt want a better deal.

Barnaby H as a either been lining his own pockets, drinking and breeding. Not a lot of time left to go into detailed analysis of numbers and such.

Needs a LOT of water to get his CSG fracked. See why he demanded the port folio.

He was being interviewed by another ALP Stenographer, who can blame him for taking her on? . In 2009, Labor's Penny Wong told the 'Four Corners' programme that she, too, did not know who owned a farm that was subject of a $19 million water buyback 'I never inquired as to who the owner of the company was,' Senator Wong said.
