A former Howard government immigration minister has blasted the Prime Minister for sending a"foolish" message to people smugglers , warning Australia is at risk of"diabolical trouble".Former immigration minister Philip Ruddock has criticised Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who he claims is sending a"foolish" message to people smugglers , after a group of Chinese asylum seekers arrived on Australia n shores.
Philip Ruddock, who served as immigration minister under the Howard government from 2001 to 2003, spoke with Sky News Australia's Chris Kenny who asked whether the latest arrival was an"alarming signal that the people smugglers are up and running again". Mr Ruddock said the Albanese government's decision to abolish the Coalition's temporary protection visas was"foolish", claiming that it sends a message to people smugglers that the situation under Labor is going to be"different".
"We want to make it very, very clear that there is no incentive on coming to Australia by boat, that people won’t be allowed to settle here because we don’t want people risking their lives and we also don’t want the quite evil trade of people smuggling to be able to profit from such activity."
