Developer who razed Corkman pub skips his $2m court appeal to wed in Spain

The County Court was told, however, that Mr Shaqiri was not present on Monday because he had travelled overseas for his wedding.

Barrister Nicholas Papas, QC, acting for the developers, said Mr Shaqiri’s tickets had been prebooked and the wedding festivities involved people flying in from around the world. Magistrate Ross Maxted said he needed to send a message “to the building and demolition industry, and the development community that such recklessness and bravado and full disregard for proper process and compliance will be severely punished”.

The Corkman, formerly the Carlton Inn, was protected by heritage rules that restricted how it could be redeveloped or altered. Mr Papas said while what happened didn’t cover the men in any glory they had been worried about the building's safety.

Yet the federal Coalition government attacks unions for upsetting the developers?

What a joke! They don't care because they know they got what they wanted. Fines are the cost of doing business.

Destroyed the pub, and will get what they wanted including a lesser fine. Let the demolitions begin.
