Opinion: Despite neglect at the top, we're muddling towards low-carbon electricity | 1RossGittins

To coin a phrase, Australia’s governments are making heavy weather of their efforts to give us an electricity system that’s secure, reliable and affordable – with declining carbon emissions. Progress is slow in every respect bar one: the move to renewable energy is showing “remarkable growth”.report, by the Energy Security Board of the Council of Australian Governments.

“Security” is now “the issue of most concern” to the board. It means maintaining a consistent flow of power at the right frequency and voltage. Failure to do so can seriously damage the system and cause significant interruptions to power supply – that is, days or months, not hours. When we come to affordability, it has “improved slightly over the year for retail customers”. Considering that retail prices leapt by 80 per cent between June 2004 and June last year, I suppose you have to regard that as progress.

Now the good news: over the three years to 2021-22, prices are expected to fall by 7 per cent, mainly becauseas more power comes from renewables generation, which is very cheap. Really? That much, eh?

1RossGittins A few weeks ago I invested in a large solar panel, a sine wave inverter and some batteries. Good for when those power blackouts hit or when you want to do some recharging. Everything from torches to phones ...become solar charged.

1RossGittins 'overbuilt transmission networks'? The 2019 report 'Health of the National Electricity Market' says on p 38 that CAPEX has been going DOWN. When reading AEMO's market notices you find that NSW power imports from Qld and VIC often hit capacity constraints

'Forced to watch her starve': Sisters lose fight to feed dying mother despite Catholic Church supportTwo South Australian sisters are denied their plea to feed their dying mother, with a public guardian refusing to reinstate the woman's feeding tube despite the intervention of the Catholic Church. Perhaps if the Catholic Church hadn’t lost all public respect because of it’s failings over incidents, including sexual and physical abuse, it’s intervention may have carried more weight. This is truly irresponsible journalism. It would have been first and foremost a MEDICAL decision to not reinsert the tube. Nasogastric tubes are not reinserted if it is clear that someone is imminently dying. Even putting up a saline drip is futile at this point. Odd how it's legal for someone to be starved to death over a long period but it's illegal for them to have an injection that allows them to pass quickly and peacefully
