In contrast, returning clean organic material to soils is beneficial. Australia's arable soils are typically low in organic carbon, which needs to be regularly supplemented.
This is why NSW banned the use on land of compost derived from mixed waste in 2019. A NSW EPA review had identified cadmium, zinc and copper as metals of high concern in this compost. It also found chemicals such as flame retardants and disinfectants were household sources of persistent organic pollutants.Food waste in landfill emits methane but it can instead be used to produce valuable compost and biogas.
It showed weekly food waste was 0.79kg per person, including 0.34kg of inedible peels, bones and expired or perished food. These households disposed of a similar amount of food waste in the home by composting, feeding to pets or flushing down the sink.

So recycling schemes are often disfunctional. But a brand new system is guaranteed to help.
Our council issued a tiny kitchen bin with biodegradable bags. Food waste goes in and it's put in to the greenwaste bin. As this is only collected every 2 weeks, it stinks, especially in the warmer weather.
I have used a compost bin for the last 15 years, can't imagine not having it. My general garbage bin is half empty every week.
That's gonna smell nice

It’s all about control and compliance…communism 101
Mine are called chooks. Simply giving three chooks to a third of the population would go a long way to reducing landfill.
So no TwitterFiles6 ,5,4,3,2,1. Or the link below. ABC goes with a bin story. The public is seeing through your corrupt biased reporting.
I decide what to recycle not the colour of my bin
Apartment complexes with bin rooms will stink.
My council allows food waste in the green bin, which gets collected weekly. Red bin is only fortnightly. They also allow us to bag clothing for charity and put it in the yellow bin.
Pfft, I'll be walking that bin several blocks away, never to return to my house again....
I got worms. Yes, I do. I chuck all food waste in by bin. I save the environment and got a steady supply of fishing bait
the plastic bag ban was all smoke and......?
