'Desperate' artists are calling for support as they describe a challenging year

"I was told that I presented as 'too successful' as an artist — that's the feedback that I got," she said.The committee also heard about the decline in government arts funding, the lack of coordination amongst federal, state and local government funding bodies, and the need for a cohesive national policy to shape priorities for funding and output in the arts and culture sector.

However, she said investment per capita in Australia in the arts had dropped over the past five years.Wood said a lack of proper funding for literature historically was robbing emerging authors of the time essential to produce impactful work.
