The novelist, alongside artists from across the cultural spectrum, told a parliamentary committee on Friday about the way in which the pandemic had exacerbated long-standing issues.

Charlotte Wood said writers were struggling to make ends meet.

Theatre-maker Julian Meyrick, also Professor of Creative Arts at Griffith University, said: "Many people in the culture sector were surprised and shocked, when COVID happened, that there wasn't a better, holistic understanding of the sector at a political level." "I was told that I presented as 'too successful' as an artist — that's the feedback that I got," she said. The committee also heard about the decline in government arts funding, the lack of coordination amongst federal, state and local government funding bodies, and the need for a cohesive national policy to shape priorities for funding and output in the arts and culture sector.

However, she said investment per capita in Australia in the arts had dropped over the past five years.Wood said a lack of proper funding for literature historically was robbing emerging authors of the time essential to produce impactful work.
