Thought to be extinct for decades, the deer have been captured more than 1800 times by motion-activated cameras.

A species of tiny deer not seen for 30 years has been rediscovered in the wilds of Vietnam, but researchers warn urgent action is needed to ensure it doesn’t disappear for good.

They set up 30 motion-activated “camera-traps” throughout the area that was the deer’s last known range.Sure enough, after six months they captured more than 1800 images of the deer from 200 separate “events”, although it was not clear whether the deer were all different animals or whether some were camera-hogs.

The group, which partially funded the research, previously rediscovered Jackson’s climbing salamander and Wallace’s giant bee, which had similarly been thought extinct. “Together, this information can provide the foundation for an evidence-based conservation plan for the silver-backed chevrotain.”
