New South Wales and the Murray Darling Basin have borne the brunt of extreme rainfall in the last three years and the coming week is no exception.In 2019, the Murray-Darling Basin, stretching from southern QLD to northern VIC and eastern SA, was in crisis near the end of its driest three-year spell on record.
If it weren't for COVID issues, mice plagues and isolated big floods, most food bowl communities would be celebrating widespread economic success. Since Friday, daily rainfall records have been broken in parts of Western Australia. Derby in the Kimberley saw 85mm in two days, compared to the October average of just 2.6mm.
This is the same double rainmaker that dominated our weather patterns last year and is providing extra fuel for this rare spring rain and storm event. A deep low pressure trough is slowly tracking east this week, producing showers and storms in every single state and territory. Normally a weather system such as this would move east out to see within a day or so – but not this time. A slow-moving high pressure system off the NSW coast is acting as a block, keeping the moisture laden air over land ready for the next weather event. Another trough will cross the southeast on Friday, producing further areas of rain, showers and thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls.
