Adrian Tourle’s daughter Claire* has always been self-conscious about her body.
In less than two months, Claire, who weighed about 90 kilograms at the beginning of the study, has lost five kilos. Several Australian and international eating disorder organisations followed, raising concerns about the safety of the teenagers in the trial. "Research tells us that kids who severely restrict their energy intake and skip meals are 18 times more likely to develop an eating disorder than those who do not diet."
"When I lost weight, I would feel good, but when I gained weight I would feel awful. That's a mindset that’s become entrenched in me and the way I view myself from really early on." At times, participants are limited to only one-quarter of their daily recommended energy intake, but researchers say their nutritional needs will still be met.
