Talk has ignited over the length of AFL quarters, with reports that the idea proposed by popular Richmond figure Neil Balme should be taken more seriously.
“Balme put this on the agenda – the debate is raged once again, and whether we need to shorten football quarters,” Clark opened by saying.“I go back to 2020 ; we had the 16-minute quarters - I remember sitting in the Gold Coast hub where Gil McLachlan over a quiet beer said to whoever was on sight that night ‘we won’t be going back to 20-minute quarters, 16 is too short’; but he intimated that 18 minutes would be the magic number.
There is certainly an argument that the current length of an AFL match is one of many aspects that make the game so unique. Quarters, which are currently 20 minutes in length plus time on, were briefly cut in length by 20% during COVID, as the league was forced to fixture more games together in a condensed period of time.At the quarter time and three-quarter time breaks, teams have a six-minute rest, while at half time a 20-minute pause in the game is had.
