Peruvian national Daniel Cortez lost his job because of the coronavirus pandemic and ended up living out of his car and going through garbage for food. He's one of thousands of temporary visa holders who have fallen through the cracks.

Daniel Cortez's heart started thumping when a drunk man started knocking on his car window in the dead of the night asking if he could sleep inside there with him. There are no commercial flights to Peru and a chartered flight costs $4,000It was one of the scariest moments he'd experienced among the last seven weeks of living out of his car in a car park near Westfield Parramatta."I've never been homeless in my life before and I hope I'll never be again.

Three months ago the 24-year-old Peruvian national arrived on a working holiday visa and secured a job as a forklift operator."My plans were to save a bit before I started an environmental engineering degree next year — but my plans aren't going very well to be honest."A week into his job, he was let go as the warehouse shut its doors in response to the coronarvirus lockdown.

Mr Cortez asked passing strangers for charity as his job hunt extended each week, but last Sunday he decided to go through garbage."When you're in that situation you start to think about how you'd prefer to die — and I decided I'd prefer to eat something and expose my life to the virus than die from hunger.Daniel has been sleeping in his car in a car park near Westfield Parramatta.

We trust you are taking his plight up with the Peruvian government?

Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain And I can see Daniel waving goodbye Oh it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes

The Peru Embassy should be helping out their stranded national not Australian taxpayers.

'Starving'? He looks well-fed to me.

Peruvian national. Don't bother reading any further.

So, if this guy has a student visa, he was required to certify he had the funds to support himself. Did he lie on the application?

Crap ABC narrative again. They forget what is actually happening in the world. A global lockdown as a result of China’s deliberate actions. We are basically in WW3 but it doesn’t seem important to them. Foreigners, racism and climate change is more important somehow.

Not our problem, was told to leave months ago. Funny how the idiots at ABC pick & choose your little narrative, ignoring the facts like if he listened to our govt. he wouldn't be adding to a homeless issue that we should be concentrating fixing of our own citizens.
