Victorian Liberal MP Tim Smith has slammed Premier Daniel Andrews’ disproportionate and “frankly totalitarian” lockdown measures which were clearly designed to “scare the hell out of people”. “It’s like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut,” Mr Smith said. Victoria will snap out of its state-wide five-day lockdown this evening after few cases of COVID-19 were recorded since the start of the re-introduced stage four restrictions.
This has prompted many Victorian opposition members to criticise the lockdown as flagrantly unnecessary. Mr Smith told Sky News he is completely opposed to such “reactionary and ridiculous” short-term lockdowns. “ are clearly more about trying to scare the hell out of people than on sound public policy, or indeed health advice”. The Liberal MP also criticised the scope of the lockdown as it included regional areas hundreds of kilometres away from Melbourne and without any trace of the virus.
