China's economic retaliation for Australia's pursuit of a global coronavirus inquiry has triggered national division and a rebuke from business leaders.

Victoria and Queensland have warned the federal government to be more diplomatic in pursuit of a coronavirus inquiry, fearing that Australia's escalating trade dispute with China will harm already fragile state economies.

China gave no warning of its intention to lodge two trade disputes over barley and red meat abattoirs this week, putting up to a $1 billion of weekly trade at risk before Australia prepares to spearhead the push for a global inquiry at the World Health Assembly. Ms Sawczak accused the government of going out "like a shag on a rock, little Australia, demanding an inquiry, insinuating blame, probably not a great foreign policy move."

The impasse comes as Russia begins exporting hundreds of tonnes of beef into China after seven years of negotiation as it looks to compete with Australia in the world's largest market.

China has decided to buy barley and beef from US despite of the fight between them at the moment. I suppose US has offered a better price. Eventually the farmer in US won

I smile no very good on Chinese government.. China wants to use us a puppet.. That's smile after no good at all maybe China wants to know everything about the Australian because next time China attack on us make sure Australia losses the battle against China.

Most profound, plain language, opinion I’ve seen on CCP China. From cup_high

Trade cartel is practically a taboo word this century but if the big agricultural producing nations set up an informal one they might be able to stop China from playing them off against each other for economic and political gain. If you can't beat it, meet its sly tactics.

CCP: Kneel down , Australia.

There are two camps - the kiss a**es who need their money....and those who don’t. I’m lucky enough to be in the latter group, my stance and conscience are clear.

Embrace short term pain and let go of Chinese Communist Party . . . trade with Taiwan.

If only China responded to the corona virus as fast as they are shutting down any investigations and imposing trade bans. A lot more people would still be alive.

First Australia started grand standing. Then “go home“ to overseas students. Now special entry consideration to oveseas student. DIPLOMACY in short supply.

Scott has to please his conservative backbench like Favaranti Wells n Andrew Hastie so he was daring to insult China with demands China is a super power they'd hate to see little sheriff down under telling them off so we have a major spat

The LNP decided to go with the White House virus conspiracy theories and this is the result. Pissing off our major trading partner is just effing dumb.

China is using us and it’s time to stand up. They have proven to be an untrustworthy and unreliable partner

I believe majority of Australians won’t kowtow & sacrifice sovereignty to Communist China for money. It’s wake up call for Australia to rethink economy & reduce dependency on China. Trust me - China buys Aussie goods not bcoz of good relations. They buy bcoz they need to.

They are not our 'friend'. Friends don't bully. The west need to move away from reliance on that country.

Australia must be 'careful' to avoid alienating China | Sky News AustraliaLiberal Senator Gerard Rennick says “sound diplomacy” should be used at all times in dealing with other countries and it is time Australia began to engage “with China in a constructive way”. \n\nBeijing has reportedly delisted four Australian abattoirs just days after threatening to impose significant tariffs on Australian barley. \n\nMr Rennick told Sky News he was mindful of former US President Ronald Reagan’s declaration that “people don’t start wars, governments do”. \n\n“I think we need tobe very careful as members of the government that we don’t run commentary on this sort of stuff in the media,” he said. \n\n“We just need to take a look at the bigger picture here because right now our hard working farmers and barley producers and meat abattoirs and that, we don’t want them losing jobs so I think we just need to engage as constructively as we can to work through whatever issues we may have.” \n\nChina's trade block is believed to be in retaliation to Australia’s push for an independent investigation into the origins of the coronavirus. \n\n“I don’t think we should roll over on a coronavirus inquiry but I think that inquiry should deal with coronavirus and not just about China,” Mr Renick said.\n\n“There’s a range of issues we have to deal with here and it’s not a question of a win, lose situation, we should be trying to find a win, win way through all of this.” \n\nImage: Getty Another tool - sound diplomacy my arse Cmon show some knackers ffs! No. Exit China. Bring everything back to Australia. Stop dealing with rogue nations that have a tantrum every time they don't get their own way!

Australia 'caught in US-China crossfire' and 'there will be serious economic implications' | Sky News AustraliaThe Switzer Report founder Peter Switzer says now is the worst time to be caught up in escalating trade tensions with China. \n\n“Once the economy’s back on its feet, that’s when it’s time to get stuck into China, but at the moment we’re vulnerable,” he said. \n\n“Obviously there’s a simmering, potential trade war and it really didn’t start with us, but we’re being caught in the crossfire because we ganged up and supported Trump in asking for an objective inquiry into China’s behavior in relation to the virus. \n\n“Clearly China’s cheesed off in the fact that we’re supporting Donald Trump and there will be serious economic implications.' \n\nMr Switzer told Sky News “this is not the time” because Australia was staring down the possibility of a great depression, which he said the government was so far managing to avoid through stimulus measures. \n Business people should be made to disclose their China exposure before making such comments, my trust is wearing thin. Thx for the obvious advice. You mean at the beginning of a recession- depression were every $ counts. Duh!

Australia should threaten China with taking back Port of Darwin: Christensen | Sky News AustraliaLNP MP George Christensen said when responding to the coronavirus, Communist China “corralled the problem for themselves, and sent (the virus) across the world”.\n\nMr Christensen has called China’s recent trade actions against Australia a “bastard act,” and said it was far “too convenient and too much of a coincidence” that only weeks after the government called for a global inquiry into COVID-19, for China to then threaten tariffs.\n\nChina has given the nation’s barley producers ten days before potentially imposing close to an 80 per cent tax on its barley imports. \n\n“These are not the actions of a reputable trading partner”.\n\nThis comes as an ongoing committee into the need for diversification in Australia’s trade relationships – chaired by Mr Christensen – is preparing to call on the ambassador to give testimony.\n\n“China’s got form on this sort of coercion when it comes to trade and mixing trade with politics'. \n\nMr Christensen told Sky News hosts Alan Jones and Graham Richardson Australia should consider using the clause in the Port of Darwin lease contract with China which renders the deal null and void in the case of a national security emergency.\n\n“If we don’t get the beef and barley back pronto and stop talking about other industries, we can actually take some action of our own, then it is a trade war”.\n\nImage: AP Australia will be taking back Darwin Port. Unless China wants to give us one of their ports. Didn't think so.....
