The stereotypical view of crypto investors being young, tech-savvy day traders is wrong. A growing cohort of Bitcoin investors are middle-aged, conservative, and buying with the intention to hold for the long haul | domp crypto trading

According to Caroline Bowler, the stereotypical view of crypto investors being young, tech-savvy day traders is wrong. From what she sees as the head of Australia’s largest cryptocurrency exchange BTCMarkets, a growing cohort of Bitcoin investors are middle-aged, conservative, and buying with the intention to hold for the long haul.

“Cryptocurrency is still so young, and so new, and so I think people are thinking this is a project that will expand and grow and develop, so they’re backing it now,” she says. “That’s a very sober view of crypto, and probably contrary to a lot of the perception and hype out there.”BTCMarkets’ Caroline Bowler

Currently, Australian cryptocurrency exchanges are only subject to the most rudimentary of regulation. A site such as BTCMarkets, which processes and holds millions in Bitcoin, Ethereum and other digital currencies, is required by the financial intelligence watchdog AUSTRAC to collect customer data for anti-money laundering purposes and is bound under the general laws of the Corporations Act. Other than that, nothing.

However, if the government’s inevitable regulation of the cryptocurrency space doesn’t pass muster, she warns that businesses won’t hesitate to take their operations - and potential millions - to other more crypto-friendly regimes such as Asia.
