Exclusive: Criminal re-offending at a record high in NSW

New data shows that recidivism has reached a new high in NSW, despite the government allocating $330 million on its reduction over four years.

A spokesman for the newly appointed Corrections Minister Anthony Roberts said the four-year funding announced in 2016 was not "fully bedded down" until late last year ."While the funding commenced in the 2016-17 financial year, the initiatives were staged for implementation between 2016-17 and 2017-18. Some initiatives required competitive tendering, others required new infrastructure or new legislation," he said.

Some funding was allocated to prisoners serving a sentence of less than six months that weren't previously offered in reoffending programs, the announcement said, with a total of 42,000 prisoners meant to reap the benefits of either a new scheme or an improved one.
