The government has extended its vaccine injury indemnity scheme to cover children under five years of age.

Babies and young children could be inoculated against COVID-19 as part of a $1 billion extension to the national vaccine rollout.The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation , which meets regularly to assess the global evidence on vaccine safety and efficacy, has so far only recommended that COVID-19 vaccines be given to children aged five and up.

There is also $69 million over the two years from 2021-22 for the Japanese Encephalitis Virus national plan, including buying 135,000 vaccine doses. Mental health and suicide prevention, which Health Minister Greg Hunt promised would be a key pillar of the budget, gets $303.2 million in new funding while the government’s Aged Care Royal Commission response is allocated an extra $122.6 million.
