Given all the infected people in the US President's circle plus the rallies and maskless events he has attended, it is almost surprising he didn't catch it sooner.

Indeed, given all the people around the President who have been infected by COVID19 - coupled with all the campaign rallies and maskless events he has attended in recent months - it is almost surprising this did not happen sooner.

Hope Hicks, however, is the closest known aide to become infected, and has spent a lot of time travelling with the President ahead of the November 3 election. On Wednesday she sat in the audience alongside Trump's family for the presidential debate against Democratic rival Joe Biden. She also travelled to Minnesota with Trump and his entourage the day after the debate, where the President attended an indoor fundraiser followed by another outdoor rally in an airport hangar.

It is not quite clear when she started feeling symptoms, but by Friday , Bloomberg, not the White House, broke the news that she had tested positive. Trump later flew to his Bedminster resort in New Jersey for a private fundraiser, before announcing that he and the first lady were being tested. Shortly before 1am on Friday morning in the US, Trump announced that he and Melania had contracted COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus that has so far killed almost 208,000 Americans and infected 7.2 million more.President Donald Trump salutes as he steps from Marine One at the White House as he returns from Bedminster on Thursday after a fundraiser. Our weekly newsletter will deliver expert analysis of the race to the White House from our US correspondent Matthew Knott.
