The 2021 Australia Day Honours put the spotlight on many unsung heroes who tirelessly put others first and strengthen the nation — including the health expert who ensures Australia never runs out of COVID-19 testing kits or ventilators.

Australia was formed on 1 January 1901 when the States formed a Federation. It’s time we recognised 1 January as the day on which Australia was actually formed. 26 January was the day on which the colony of NSW came into existence. Hardly relevant to wider Australia.
