COVID-19 disruptions hampered development of Australian children | nikkprecel

Early childhood educators are pushing for more resources to be invested in the sector as evidence emerges that repeated COVID-19 lockdowns and disruptions have affected children’s developmentshows the number of children in Australia who were developmentally “on track” across five key areas in 2021 had decreased from 2018, the first national fall since 2009.Credit:There was also a slight lift in the percentage of children who were described as developmentally vulnerable, increasing from 21.

It assesses whether children are developmentally on track, at-risk or vulnerable in physical health and wellbeing, social competence, language and cognitive skills, emotional maturity and communication skills and general knowledge. In Victoria those who were “developmentally on track” in terms of emotional maturity increased, children who were developmentally vulnerable in terms of social competence slightly increased, while physical health and wellbeing remained fairly consistent compared to previous years.

“What we’ve been doing has been working, what’s got in the way is the pandemic and no one can get in the way of that.” Thrive by Five chief executive Jay Weatherill said that child development occurs in high-quality interactions and experiences in environments that are free of stress. “This needs deep collaboration between national and state, it’s not one level of government, it’s both levels,” he said.
