AFP assistant commissioner Justine Gough said this update was to provide “some reassurance to members of the community that policing agencies around Australia are doing whatever they can to protect Australians”.

“Australians should look out for suspicious and unexpected activity across online accounts, including telco, bank and utility accounts, and make sure that they report suspicious activity in their bank accounts immediately or to their financial institutions,” she says. “Do not click on any links in any emails or SMS claiming to be from Optus. If someone calls claiming to be from Optus, police, bank or another organisation, and offers to help with the data breach, consider hanging up and contacting the organisation on its official contact details because the caller could be a scammer. She does not answer a question over whether Optus gave the information about the potential breach of Medicare numbers to the AFP last week.

“Optus continues to provide support to the continued investigation and that helps to protect Australians impacted by this breach.”
