Analysis: Australia has just told the residents of its largest trading partner that it no longer believes they are safe at home | ErykBagshaw

Thursday's decision to offer up to 10,000 Hong Kong students and workers already in Australia safe haven from draconian new national security legislation imposed by Beijing is the right thing to do. But it will come at a cost.

The speed at which the Chinese government has moved to impose its authority on Asia's once-liberal finance hub has shocked many of the city's 7.5 million residents. This is the most diplomatically heated migration decision by an Australian Prime Minister since Bob Hawke offered 27,000 Chinese students refuge after the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989.

ErykBagshaw What is courageous is the Australian government offer the same to existing refugees and new refugees.

ErykBagshaw Don't pretend to be a fighter for these people, instead, you are just a lapdog for your American daddy. auspol

ErykBagshaw should we tell americans the same thing? lol

ErykBagshaw Just make sure they are HK born and bred. Can imagine mainlanders posing as HK residents trying to worm their way in.

ErykBagshaw Need the HKers to boost real estate market desperately, hah?

ErykBagshaw China. Lol.

ErykBagshaw Australia sage heaven? Maybe for some, but not for Chinese or Chinese lookalikes? With the rising reports of whites beating, shouting at Chinese lookalikes and whipping outside China embassy. Maybe they thought HK don’t read international news.

ErykBagshaw ... which was stating the bleeding obvious given events in HK and the UyghurGenocide .

ErykBagshaw Favours for Trump

ErykBagshaw Fair

ErykBagshaw No HKers told Australia that and we said ‘ok’ we believed them.

ErykBagshaw 'Courageous Hong Kong visas will come at a price' Some things money can't buy.

ErykBagshaw To say we have little left to lose is possibly the dumbest thing I've ever seen an Australian journalist write. How can you masquerade as a 'China correspondent' when you can write something as tone deaf as this piece?

ErykBagshaw Chinese govt can make it harder to shift the funds of its citizens too. What’s the bet this doesn’t go as planned? Bejing reacts passive aggressive to anything that doesn’t go their way now.

ErykBagshaw Its actually farking crazy.. here in Oz saying to every HK organised crime 'business' & the rest.. come on down to Oz.. buy a suburb, lay on the beach, do what you want.. AND we won't send you back to HK for your crimes cause we've Suspended our Extradition Protocols..auspol

ErykBagshaw And Australia is correct

Time to tell China to go jump. Seek better partnerships with like minded Nations such as India and Japan. Nations who don’t intern dissenters in gulags while bullying the rest of the world. Excellent. Thank goodness we didn't get a Labor government a year ago Did that NSW copper just say that the NSW quarantine system was great and only had 1 person escape?

Hong Kong citizens in Australia will be allowed to stay another five years amid China crackdownPeople from Hong Kong currently in Australia will be allowed to stay in the country for five more years and offered a pathway to permanent residency, following China's move to impose a controversial security law on the city. Finally some good news Huh? Its a magnanimous gesture, but we have a reputation for unjust hardline anti-immigration, built over decades of treating refugees like scum. Nothing to do with money, per chance? PM don't get sucked in with ploy it's just a plan to relocate to another country..It's deal simple they are all young and all trying to play a game...China is running Hong Kong the right way ..It's the youth trying get relocated because they don't like the way it is now.real easy
