Queensland Shadow Health Minister Ros_Bates_MP says a fully vaccinated young couple who were denied a hotel quarantine exemption to be with their new born baby is the latest act of 'non-compassion' by the Palaszczuk government.

08/06/2021Queensland Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates says a fully vaccinated young couple who were denied a hotel quarantine exemption to be with their new born baby is the latest act of "non-compassion" by the Palaszczuk government. "This is a young couple, this is their first child, a little baby who was born 10 weeks premature, the couple have been in hotel quarantine for 12 days already and they are fully vaccinated," she told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

"The baby was in utero, the parents have obviously tested negative so they are not a threat to their own child, in fact they should be with their own child - it is heartless." Ms Bates said this couple's case has Queenslanders concerned that despite having the "best reason in the world" for exemption from hotel quarantine, they are "not going to get it".

West Melbourne outbreak not a result of hotel quarantine breach | Sky News AustraliaVictoria Acting Police Minister Danny Pearson says there is no evidence a breach in hotel quarantine led to the introduction of the highly infectious Delta variant of COVID-19 into the community. \n\nAlthough genomic sequencing had linked the West Melbourne cluster to the Delta strain of the virus, health authorities, up until now, were unsure as to source of the virus.\n\nA genomic link for current West Melbourne cluster has now been established with health officials revealing the variant was introduced via a returned overseas traveller last month. \n\nAuthorities believe the Delta strain originated from a traveller who arrived in Melbourne from Sri Lanka on May 8 and returned a positive result on the same day. \n\nThe man was subsequently transferred from the Novotel Ibis quarantine hotel to the Holiday Inn health hotel the following day and was release from quarantine on May 23. \n\nAll 24 passengers and crew onboard the flight as well as the 360 hotel quarantine staff have returned negative tests for the virus. \n\nResidents at both the Novotel Ibis and Holiday Inn hotels have also tested negative. \n\nMr Pearson says investigations into how the virus was transmitted are ongoing. \n\n“While we are continuing to review CCTV and incident logs again, I can confirm that so far there is no reported or obvious breach of infection prevention control protocols or anything else that would indicate a transmission has happened inside the hotel,” he said. ‘This is not controversial’: Matt Kean pushes to phase out plastics in NSW | Sky News AustraliaNSW Energy Minister Matt Kean says the state government’s push to phase out plastics is “not controversial” but rather “practical environmentalism”.\n\nThe legislation would see plastic plates, cutlery, and even plastic sticks on cotton ear buds outlawed.\n\nDiscussing why this issue is something which needs to be legislated, Mr Kean told Sky News host Chris Kenny every other state and territory has legislated for it as well as the commonwealth.\n\n“And business is moving in that direction, so in fact it’s actually costing businesses that operate in New South Wales and across the commonwealth money, because they’ve got to have a different regime in every different state and territory,” he said.\n\n“All we’re doing is looking to align with what’s happening at the commonwealth level and what industry are already doing.”\n\nAccording to Mr Kean, the legislation is “practical environmentalism” which will lead to better outcomes for the environment and better health outcomes for the community.\n\n“It’ll be good for our planet, it’ll be good for human health, it’s a win-win.”\n

'Stop destroying lives': Calls escalate to end Bileola family's exile | Sky News AustraliaSocial worker Angela Fredericks has urged the federal government to “stop wasting money and destroying lives” and allow the Bileola family to resettle in regional Queensland. \n\nCalls for government intervention have escalated after the family’s youngest daughter, Tharunicaa, was transferred to Perth to receive emergency medical treatment. \n\nThe three-year-old is understood to be suffering from septicemia - a serious blood infection - which resulted from untreated pneumonia. \n\nFriends of the family say the child’s condition significantly deteriorated after requests for medical intervention were ignored by detention staff on Christmas Island.\n\nMs Fredericks has called for a “rational” response to the situation, arguing granting the family permission to stay would not “jeopardise all the other policies, all the other protocols that this government has in place” in dealing with asylum seekers.\n\n“I think what we’re getting so frustrated about is there’s a very clear resettlement option for this family and that’s here in Biloela,” she told Sky News.\n\n“Let’s stop wasting money, let’s stop destroying these for people’s lives, and let's just look at the facts and take a rational approach moving forward. \n\n“They were legally allowed to come into our community and settle and they did just that. They integrated, they worked hard… there’s no need for any further isolation.'\n\n\n\n Gangs of new Australians run riot, creating havoc on the streets & nothing gets done. All this family is guilty of is fitting in with a small community & being made to feel welcome. That's LNP justice for you. lroc1501

Black box recovered from sinking cargo ship | Sky News AustraliaA black box has been recovered from the MV X-Press Pearl, a cargo ship sinking off the coast of Sri Lanka which was burning for nearly two weeks.\n\nThe Singapore-registered MV X-Press Pearl was carrying over 200 tonnes of chemicals at the time it caught fire off Sri Lanka's west coast.\n\nCoastal Oceanographer Professor Charitha Pattiaratchi said the contents of the black box have not been revealed but will tell authorities “what actually caused the event”.\n\nHe said the “biggest problem”, however, is the 78 tonnes of plastic pallets which will be swept across the Indonesian Ocean and “last for many years and many decades to come”.\n\n“Many, most likely, will end up also in the Australian territories - Christmas Island, Cocos Islands, etcetera,” Professor Pattiaratchi said.\n\nHe said authorities are unsure of how much oil remains on the ship but are considering ways to dispose of it safely.\n\n“At the moment they’re still trying to look at divers to go down, to inspect to see whether there is oil inside or not.”\n
