Council rates hikes to impact millions in NSW | MeganGorrey

Most NSW councils will have their rate rises pegged at 3.7 per cent next financial year after a decision by the regulator made councils in fast-growing areas able to increase levies up to 6.8 per cent.

“We have taken these increased costs into consideration while also trying to limit the level of rate increases that ratepayers are facing,” Donnelly said. The tribunal is currently reviewing concerns about the way rates are calculated, following its controversial decision in June to approve increases above the pegged rate, known as special variations, for 86 councils.from rates by including population growth in a formula used to determine what residents were charged each year. This means ratepayers in the Camden Council area face the highest rate peg of 6.

Councils in fast-growing areas – such as Camden in south-west Sydney – have greater powers to raise rates. The rate cap has been set at 3.7 per cent for the vast majority of Sydney councils.
