Gurdev Singh took his family to India for a three-week holiday in February. Five months later they have only just gotten home — and their ordeal is not over yet.

The Singh family was stuck in India for almost five months due to COVID-19While in quarantine, COVID-19 cases in Victoria spiked and the suburb they lived in was designated a hotspot

The coronavirus pandemic has meant they have only just returned to their Melbourne home nearly five months later — and their ordeal is not over yet."Then we got news that international flights had been cancelled. As soon as the flights were cancelled, the Singhs went into lockdown to avoid catching coronavirus.Gurdev Singh, pictured with his wife and daughter in India, struggled to get his family a flight home to Australia.

They spent the next four months talking to the Australian Government, trying to organise their trip back to Melbourne. "Every time they sent a flight, there weren't any bassinet seats available for the kids," Mr Singh said. The family watched with concern as the number of COVID-19 cases in India skyrocketed and the country went into lockdown.Eventually they managed to get seats on a flight back to Australia, still without a bassinet for their then 11-month-old daughter, just relieved to be leaving.Read more about coronavirus:Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to seek, up and down arrows for volume.
