The main thoroughfare leading to one of Sydney's most popular beaches could be closed off to traffic for a pop-up entertainment precinct under a creative proposal | AngusGthompson

Randwick City Council is considering scrapping part of Coogee Bay Rd of cars to allow bands, dining, drinking and family activities to occupy the space as part of a plan to kickstart the local economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.Credit:Mayor Danny Said said the idea, which could also feature temporary lawns, street art and games, would enliven the suburb's commercial centre and support businesses hit hard by the pandemic.

“During recent weeks and months, I have heard from businesses of the pressure space restrictions are having on local cafes and I have heard our local hotels continue to experience high accommodation vacancies," Cr Said said."Businesses are feeling the pressure and council is looking at ways we can help to boost our local economy and create jobs."

The council is yet to make a decision on whether to proceed with the proposal, with a detailed plan still to be developed, but multiple businesses have backed it.Credit:the general manager of the Coogee Bay Hotel said: “At this time, a sense of community is more important than ever, so anything we can do to support local businesses and bring everyone together is only a positive thing.”

Brenton McHatton, the owner of bar and restaurant Little Jack Horner said the goal was to give people a reason to come back. "I love the hustle and bustle of the place on a sunny day, I love the vibe and the energy of the place, but it’s still small enough that you know everybody in town,” he said. The most important news, analysis and insights delivered to your inbox at the start and end of each day. AngusGthompson They've already done a test run of it back 1-2 years ago when this piece of road was closed for roadworks for an extended time. Businesses (cafes, restaurants) failed. Many other businesses -- which bounced back when the road was reopened -- struggled.

AngusGthompson How can this be possible during these socially distant times? How can this be good for businesses like hairdressers, nail salons etc? Will only be good for the bars and bottle stores. A sandpit! Imagine the state of it on a Sunday morning, it’ll be an adult litter box.

AngusGthompson What a stupid STUPID idea.

AngusGthompson Nice idea, but it’ll turn into Manly Corso... and you know how that gets...

AngusGthompson Parking is hard enough as it is. Can’t see how that’s good for businesses like Maloney’s etc. I stop there at least once a day. Will end up shopping in Randwick if they block the street.

AngusGthompson I assume it’ll be between Brook and Arden. Perfect size for it. Should be fun, for a while. Like, maybe a month tops. Will they lift the precinct wide alcohol ban?

AngusGthompson How about the important fact that virtually none of the other businesses along Coogee Bay Rd support it?!
