A Victorian police officer who punched a man in the head multiple times while he was in a police station's cells has had a conviction recorded after being found guilty of unlawful assault.

A Latrobe Valley police officer who punched a man in the head multiple times while he was in the Moe police stations cells has had a conviction recorded after being found guilty of unlawful assault.

Howell's barrister, Nadia Kaddeche, asked the court to not record a conviction because it would jeopardise his employment with Victoria Police and asked the court to take into account his prior military service. She also noted Mr Hornsby was suffering from untreated mental health conditions and was drug and alcohol affected when the assault occurred.Ms Kaddeche told the court the fight in the police station cells had changed"and probably will continue to change" Howell's life.

The court heard Howell had a 10-year career with Victoria Police and had previously served overseas in the military and should be remembered for that rather than a"50 second in totality incident".However, Victoria Police prior offence guidelines published online for new recruits say a potential recruit guilty of a summary assault charge can only join the police five years after the offence.

Govts should identify hate crime as distinct form of assault or damage | Sky News AustraliaFormer deputy commissioner of the New South Wales Police Force Nick Kaldas says hate crimes should be identified by governments as a distinct form of assault or damage.\n\nMr Kaldas says that to deal with hate crimes, they must first be clearly identified, then quantified, before dedicating resources to managing the issue.\n\nThe former police officer points to the example of the United States and Europe, who have already made this switch in dealing with hate crime and can provide empirical data on its growth. \n\n\n\n I hate my ex girlfriend and like to post this on line does this classify as hate speech? Telling the uncomfortable truth these days appears to be a hate crime. Why? Such a logical approach will never happen in NSW because both sides of politics have their pet 'hates' which they will never let go of - hates such as licensed, law-abiding firearm owners and hunters.
