Back-to-back flooding events that have swept through the Northern Rivers region have highlighted the need to fast track the roll-out of a nationally consistent emergency warning system, almost 18 years after it was first flagged.
“The process for pursuing national consistency has taken far too long,” the report said. “Progress to develop and implement... the Australian Warning System - since it was first proposed in 2004, has been glacial.” The NSW SES said it had introduced components of the system and would complete the full transition by the end of the year. The Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council is the lead agency charged with rolling out the national system but declined to respond to questions.
Laura_R_Chung A well equiped, mobile national disaster military response unit should be set up. Volunteers in the SES and RFS R now out of their depth as climate change bites. Rescue, engineering and medical elements should B the basis of the unit. Stockpiles of accommodation modules R needed.
