Mascot residents are outraged over a $60 million student accommodation proposal, saying the project will devalue the area | Laura_R_chung

A $60 million student accommodation proposal for Mascot in Sydney's inner south has outraged residents, who say the project will devalue the area and make it "unbearable for the families and couples living within the vicinity".

In submissions to Bayside Council, more than 140 residents questioned why student accommodation was needed in an area "where there are no universities, TAFEs or colleges"."The noise factor due to students living on the premises having parties, large get-togethers will become unbearable for the families and couples living within the vicinity of the intended site," said one submission, which echoed the sentiment of many others.

"We have suffered enough with the issues related to the Mascot Towers, now this. We deserve a peaceful living environment, not what the council is planning for us," one resident wrote. "Iglu student communities are not only loved by those who live in them but they are also very positive contributors to the neighbourhoods in which we operate, both in terms of local commerce and employment," he said.

Welcome, Prime Minister, to your trial by firePerspective: Scott Morrison's planned national inquiry into the bushfire disaster is welcome, but it will succeed or fail on the details - and it will depend on assembling experts to guide the process, writes Professor Ross Bradstock So in other words if it fails to show it was climate change then you're already setting up the but they didn't do it properly narrative. Just like the rwnj who couldn't accept the findings that halal wasn't evil. You're all cut from the same cloth. Will it include a forensic analysis of how much was known about the upcoming season and what decisions were made to prepare for it and hold people to account if appropriate? It’s definitely been a baptism ...

Welcome, Prime Minister, to your trial by fireScott Morrison has an opportunity to be known not only as the incumbent Prime Minister during our greatest bushfire crisis, but as the leader who guided us towards better co-existence with fire in the future.| OPINION ausfires had* Co-existence? This wouldn’t need to be the case if we took a proactive approach to fire management and the effect climate change has on the fire season. Unfortunately the liberal government had the chance and the warnings to act upon. The choose to do nothing. Hope that before any 'policy change', ScottMorrisonMP calls the Royal Commission and makes the Terms of Reference wide enough to consider the real causes of Global warming (Hint: It ain't CO2) so Scientists can include some real science (not politics).
