Preschool enrolments have dropped for the first time in years in NSW, causing concern children may be missing out on the benefits of early education as parents working from home opt to mind them themselves.
“I think it’s understandable why families are making that choice, but it’s also a good time to remind families how important early education is and how much of an impact those two years before school can have on their child,” she said. According to the 2018 Australian Early Development Census, one in five children in NSW arrive at primary school with a vulnerability in either physical health, social competence, emotional maturity, language and cognitive skills or communication skills and general knowledge. Ten per cent of children are vulnerable in two or more of these areas.
While early education can be viewed as a trade-off between a parents’ daily pay and fees, Dr Murphy said it is not simply about care.
