Commonwealth withdraws COVID-19 disaster payments in Victoria

Melbourne residents will no longer have access to federal COVID-19 emergency payments, after the Commonwealth withdrew its hotspot declaration.Greater Melbourne residents will no longer be able to access the temporary COVID payments

Melbourne's strict lockdown will be lifted from midnight and restrictions will be eased further in regional Victoria, but Greater Melbourne will still be subjected to a range of restrictions, including the continued closure of some businesses., while workers who lost less than 20 hours could receive $325.

The payment, which will be available to workers in any future lockdowns in any other states or territories, was dependent on Greater Melbourne being considered a hotspot by Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly. Today, Professor Kelly said he had decided to withdraw the Commonwealth hotspot designation inline with the lifting of the lockdown.While the end of the payments will mean a financial blow for some Melbourne residents whose work is still affected by the ongoing restrictions, other Commonwealth support measures will continue for the next two weeks.

That includes financial support for aged care providers to make sure their staff are only working at one facility at a time, a move designed to stop workers spreading the virus unknowingly from one nursing home to another.
