Opposition is brewing to Switzerland's plans to abolish the nation's stockpile of coffee, in place for decades, after declaring the beans not vital for human survival.

Switzerland plans to abolish the nation's emergency stockpile of coffee, which has been in place for decades, after declaring the beans are not vital for human survival — though opposition to the proposal is brewing.

The country stockpiles other staples, too, such as sugar, rice, edible oils and animal feed, the Government announced on Wednesday. According to the plan released for public comment, coffee stockpiling obligations would expire by the end of 2022, with companies free to draw down what they store in their warehouses.

I beg to differ, too much blood in your Caffeine system is life threatening.

For some people I know, if they had the option, their coffee would be taken intravenously to get coffee hit.....

Brunswick has cut off diplomatic relations with Switzerland.

Have the Swiss never suffered from Caffeine withdrawal?

Wrong!

thomas_m19 this can’t possibly be true😳

Coffee not essential for life? Tell him he is dreaming.

Technically correct. Persistent vegetative state still life.

Swiss Government suck.

RadioNational Thats ok because the coffee they stockpiled was shite anyway. Trust me, I've drunk it...

They may regret their conclusions when the zombie coffee apocalypse begins

Tea. Now THAT is essential

Which planet are they on (or what type of bean)?

Neither is Swiss chocolate and watches, but coffee is more relied upon globally by the many

Never has a government been so WRONG

What of course its essential for life.;)

the Swiss have always been bit quaint.

Well!!!!...I disagree completely. Ask my kids, should you talk to mummy before a coffee in the morning If you value your life, the answer is no

This should be a major policy question for our coming election!

Well, I agree, now they can give all that coffee to me :)

Many disabled people self-medicate with coffee though… it’s an essential item for them.

where would people be without coffee?

Why would someone say that! That’s hate speech!

SWITZERLAND (through megaphone): PUT DOWN THE ROASTED BEANS AND THE UNBLEACHED FILTERS AND COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP! ME: No. SWITZERLAND: *declares neutrality*

So it's official, then. We are in the end days.

What! are you kidding? Maybe not essential to others’ lives BUT necessary for my survival during the day!

But GOOD coffee is. When I was in the US for 11 days and could only find Starbucks for 7 of them, even my 4yo was asking 'Daddy, can we PLEASE find Mummy a coffee?'

Yeah it is!

They're wrong.

What about the psychological essential. Imagine a disaster...and you sit down to something normal, a nice cup of coffee. For me it would help a lot.

Who said that.

Do you want to see people get murdered? Cause that's how you get people murdered.

RadioNational It is essential to life. Get rid of the food if there is a shortage of space.

True. But it is essential for sanity in an insane world. 😁

Maybe the price will go down now.

Maybe not essential for life, but for happiness 😁

Switzerland is the 7th biggest consumer of coffee in the world. (Australia doesn’t even make the top 20). It wouldn’t be me getting between a Swiss person and their coffee.

Disagree

I would have thought securing Cocoa production for chocolate would be preferred over Coffee production. You can get caffeine from a pharmacy, or energy drink.

Not vital to survival?! Trust me, you don’t want to meet me with no coffee

Not essential for life? Know plenty who are hardly human until their morning coffee (or two)

What’s next? No more emergency Bordeaux

Sacrilege!

WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?!

Fake news

That is factually incorrect.

Not to my life, but to everyone around me it is.

Some bleary eyed voters will no doubt oppose this decision but then again a good old cup of tea gets me going each morning.

Fake news. It most certainly is essential.

Your daily coffee could be one reason why you can't get a loanThe scrutiny on borrowing is the toughest it's been, with banks and credit unions putting the daily spending habits of potential customers under the microscope. First it was avocados, now coffee...well I dont drink coffee so guess im off to the hook... Ridiculous, after they robbed thier customers blind, they are still calling the shots. Do some research, there are other, smaller landers out there... Now, they don’t want us to have coffee. Soon, it’ll be water and electricity. And then... clothes...

At his local coffee shop, Sanjiv goes by 'Nick'Sick of repeating themselves, some people with non-Anglo names have taken to using a pseudonym. My name is also Sanjiv and I use the name 'Andrew' for ordering anything. Far simpler. It also arose from the uncanny fact that almost every time I say my name over the phone, people hear 'Andrew' for some reason... No way! Who would have thought. People coming to a new country and assimilating into the culture. This will not do. How the fuck is this news? People spell my name incorrectly all the time. Even worse when I call any call centre. I don’t get a newspaper article about it.

New York measles emergency: Mayor orders mandatory vaccinationsA US city has ordered an entire neighbourhood to be vaccinated against measles within 48 hours or face a $1000 fine. Good Man the ant-vaxxers will be in a frenzy over this. They will say it's the greatest conspiracy since JFK was shot. Very tyrannical to force people to do anything. That is not liberty. If the vaccine worked why are the people whom get them worried about the ones who don’t?
