Essendon supporters have long memories. That much is clear, after they drowned Western Bulldogs youngster Cody Weightman in a sea of boos during the two clubs’ AFL clash at Marvel Stadium on Friday night. The Bulldogs forward’s attention from the crowd was perplexing, given the relatively inconspicuous game he had been playing. But the Essendon faithful continued to make their feelings clear about the 23-year-old, much to the confusion of Channel 7 commentator Matthew Richardson.

“I’ve had a few messages from some Essendon people and they’re saying the Weightman stuff dates back to the elimination final in Tasmania in 2021 where they weren’t happy with a few things — free kicks, apparently,” he said. “Weightman didn’t pay the free kicks though, did he?” In that match, Weightman helped lift the Bulldogs to a 49-point win with a match-winning four-goal performance. All four of those goals came directly from free kicks.
