"Many people who were arrested have been a part of non-violent direct action workshops, they’ve been trained in what to expect and briefed on their legal rights," Ms Baxter said.

Assistant Commissioner Mick Willing on Tuesday said NSW Police had "intelligence to indicate some [activists] purposely set out to be arrested" but declined to go into detail as the matter was before the courts. "[On Monday], despite repeat warnings from the police, some members of the Extinction Rebellion movement chose to break the law and chose to cause as much disruption as they possibly could and as a result we saw police take the action that they did."He said police were aware the group's activities on Wednesday could involve Sydney's rail network and asked organisers to "allow the wider community to go about their day-to-day business with minimal disruption".

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian asked activists to "think of more creative, responsible ways of getting the message across"."There’s a peaceful way of doing things, disrupting the public simply gets people’s backs up," Ms Berejiklian said.
