Skyrocketing costs or flat-out insurance ineligibility are becoming more widespread as climate change hits home. | OPINION by Nicki Hutley climatechange environment realestate

floods and extreme wind – by suburb, LGA or electorate – based on low, medium and high emissions scenarios and across decades .

For example, a property that would cost $300,000 to replace is forecast to experience annual average damage costs of $3000 or more. At such high levels, insurance companies will either withdraw products or will only offer them at premiums which are out of reach for most, if not all, households. We have already seen this play out in cyclone-exposed regions of northern Australia.

Our economy can’t afford any more head-in-the-ground climate rhetoric. Half a million displaced Australian families cannot become 2030’s headline. They will play a critical role in determining the insurability and future prosperity of entire communities and regions across the country.
