The goals set out in the $13 billion plan finds water recovery to date has been successful but will be more difficult under a drying climate, a new review has found.

A major review of the $13 billion Murray-Darling Basin Plan has highlighted the progress made in recovering water for the environment while addressing some major challenges posed by climate change.

Murray Darling Basin Authority head, Phillip Glyde said 2100 of the 2057 gigalitres of water had been recovered so far. But modelling undertaken by the CSIRO has highlighted the extent a warming climate would continue to impact the basin. Much of the remaining water recovery under the plan comes in the form of engineering works to use water more efficiently and projects designed to allow larger flows through the system — known as supply and constraints projects.
