After promising to honour minority rights, local Taliban leaders evict hundreds of Hazara families, leaving many displaced in rugged mountain areas with no supplies.

Large swathes of barren land were previously rewarded to powerful men by former Afghan king Amir Abdur Rahman and his successors.

Mr Ali said he believed that while the claims were not entirely unfounded, the Taliban could be using this case as a "kind of lesson" for local residents. A journalist in Daikundi province told the ABC that although the families were aware of the court order, some Taliban officials in Daikundi were now living in the homes of those displaced.

Mohammad, a father of three young girls who asked to be referred to by first name only, was also evicted from a property on which he was born and raised. He said Taliban officials gathered everyone to the town mosque and told them they must leave, "otherwise they would bomb our houses and destroy everything".Mohammad said he was hit with a gun as they tried to resist forced eviction. When he tried to resist he was beaten with a rifle butt. His wife still has panic attacks in the night.
