City of Sydney approves outdoor dining until 2025 - but it comes with a warning | michaelkoziol

The waiving of outdoor dining fees in the City of Sydney will be extended for two years until mid-2025.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore warned the decision to extend the program “should not be seen by others as an opportunity to increase rents or unfairly favour some in the community over others”.The council’s decision on Monday to forgo outdoor dining fees for another two years – beyond this council’s current term – effectively embeds an initiative, which has beenMoore said ongoing economic uncertainty and “heaven help us” the spectre of another COVID-19 wave meant the program should continue.

Footpath dining can now continue until July 2025 with no extra fees payable – which will cost the council about $4 million in lost revenue. While outdoor dining fees may yet be waived permanently, the council is concerned landlords could dramatically increase rents if the effective floor space of a business is permanently expanded.
