The 1,800 residents of remote Christmas Island fear they are facing a potential economic catastrophe.

Uninhabited until the end of the 19th century, Christmas Island also supports a large range of endemic species and extraordinary birdlife.Lisa Preston says the island's isolation makes it a challenging destination. The mine still employs more than 150 people, but with leases expiring by 2034, Mr Lai concedes the operation's days are numbered.Phosphate mining has occured on Christmas Island for more than 120 years.
