The communist government in Beijing has to manoeuvre around the issue of being both “really tough and nationalistic” for the domestic population and attempting to “calm the Biden administration”.

Sky News host James Morrow said China has “two problems it’s got to solve” which are inherently polar opposites. “They’ve got to show themselves as being really tough and nationalist for their domestic population,” he said. “But at the same time they actually have to try and keep things calm for a while so they can calm the Biden administration into doing some sort of reset with China”.

It comes as Chinese war planes were sent over the Taiwan strait and into Taiwan’s southwestern air defence zone. The flight of the eight nuclear-capable bombers, four fighter jets, and one anti-submarine patrol aircraft prompted a swift response from Taiwan who launched missiles to monitor the situation. Mr Morrow said this display was designed more for “domestic consumption” rather than to “scare Taiwan or the Americans”.
