The European Union has tied future economic cooperation with China to its record on human rights, calling for independent observers to enter Xinjiang, while condemning the Chinese Communist Party's crackdown in Hong Kong and its treatment of journalists.

European Council President Charles Michel says concerns were reiterated over China’s treatment of minorities in Xinjiang and Tibet, and the treatment of human rights defenders and journalists.The treatment of journalists was directly raised by European leaders with China's President Xi Jinping afterlast week. The events were watched closely by European diplomats in Berlin and Brussels, as fears grow for the future of independent reporting in a tense business and geopolitical environment.

"China does not accept human rights proselytisers and opposes double standards," he said according to Chinese state media service Xinhua.
