China plunges millions into hard COVID-19 lockdown

As nation’s like Australia move away from pursuing a COVID-zero strategy, China is doubling down on drastic measures to reduce the spread of the virus.

While the number of infections are far smaller than those recorded in Australia, China’s zero tolerance approach has resulted in big response from authorities. Lanzhou, which has reported 39 cases, will now see stay-at-home orders introduced across the city with the “entry and exit of residents” limited to necessary supplies and treatment.

This comes after Beijing recorded three new cases on Tuesday but authorities are expecting more infections as they ramp up testing efforts. The outbreak has been linked to a group of Chinese tourists who visited several provinces after starting out from Shanghai.
