China has halted imports from European salmon suppliers amid fears they might be linked to a coronavirus outbreak at a Beijing market, although experts say the fish itself is unlikely to carry the disease.

State-run newspapers reported the virus was discovered on chopping boards used for imported salmon at Beijing's Xinfadi market, the source of a cluster of infections that has sparked fears of a second wave of the pandemic in China. The reports prompted major supermarkets in Beijing to remove salmon from their shelves.

Genetic traces of the virus from the Beijing market outbreak suggested it could have come from Europe. His comments echoed those of experts earlier on Monday who said the fish itself was unlikely to carry the disease and any link to salmon may have been the result of cross-contamination. Keith Neal, an emeritus professor of the epidemiology of infectious diseases at Britain's University of Nottingham, said any link to salmon was likely the result of cross contamination.

Australia ‘being punished’ by China as Australian man faces execution | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Chris Kenny says Australia “is currently being punished” by China for “daring to suggest the world needs an independent investigation into the origins of COVID-19,” after Beijing announced an Australian man will face the death penalty after being found guilty of drug importation charges.\n\nKarm Gillespie was arrested in 2013 for drug trafficking charges, and was last week convicted and will now face the death penalty.\n\n“Gillespie has been in custody in China for seven years yet only now do we get clarity on charges, conviction and sentence,” Mr Kenny said.\n\n“China routinely executes more prisoners each year than any other country.\n\n“But there is little doubt that this latest sentence fits the pattern of trying to punish Australia.\n\n “This is just another insight into the political system we are dealing with.”\n\n Which ignorant Australian thought he could get away with importing drugs to China. He totally deserves it. Don't do illegal sh*t. I think it’s a matter for them. Not us.

Australian sentenced to death in China for drug trafficking honest to a fault, friends sayFriends of Karm Gilespie, the Australian sentenced to death in China, are organising a public appeal, with some saying they had no idea he was locked in a Chinese prison for the past six-and-a-half years. Honest right up to the drug smuggling. Pfttt. How stupid can people be to still smuggle drugs into Asian countries with tight drug laws? Little sympathy The tension with China has nothing to do with it. As long as he received a fair trial then he deserves what he gets in the certain knowledge that, if caught, he would be severly dealt with. That's the risk that he was prepared to take.
