The decision by the Pacific's peak diplomatic body to exclude major international powers from a crucial meeting next month will give leaders the opportunity to discuss regional issues without outside pressure.

The Pacific's peak diplomatic body looks set to exclude the United States, China and several other major countries from a crucial leaders meeting in Fiji next month in a move that could help shelter the gathering from intensifying geostrategic competition buffeting the region.

The forum has 21 partners, including the United States, China, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Canada, India, Singapore and the United Kingdom. It will likely be held separately later this year, although it's also possible that PIF will propose a virtual meeting for Dialogue Partners that week.

Pacific islands leaders are expected to endorse a sensitive agreement to stop Micronesia from splitting from the Forum.

Sounds pretty ridiculous to me

Neither country has any real interest in the Pacific except as potential military bases.

Well there you are - pulling their weight

there is absolutely NO reason that china should be represented at the meeting and nor infact should the untied states since they only have an 'associate' membership status in the forum.

And so they should!
